What “challenging” actually means
Course Lab doesn't grade courses. It grades the gap between a course and you — which is why the same track can read comfortable for one player and severe for the next. Here's every step.

Your baseline
A Handicap Index describes your ability on a course of standard difficulty — slope 113, rating equal to par. That's the yardstick everything else is measured against.
Step 02
The course handicap
The USGA formula converts your index into the strokes you actually receive at a specific set of tees, using that tee's slope and course rating.
Step 03
The difference
Subtract your index from that course handicap. What's left is the extra strokes this course demands of you — the number the colours read.
Course Handicap = Index × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par) Δ strokes = Course Handicap − Index = Index × (Slope ÷ 113 − 1) + (Course Rating − Par)
The slope term is what makes this personal. It scales with your index, so a hard course punishes a higher handicap far more than a low one — which is exactly what happens on the golf course, and exactly what a single “course difficulty” rating can't tell you.

A verdict is a property of a tee, not a course. Rating everything from the championship tips flatters nobody; rating from the forward tees flatters everybody. So we pick the set you'd realistically play, following the USGA's Tee It Forward guidance, linearised:

The rated tee closest to that target wins — and we always name it. On a course page you can click any row in the tee table and watch the number move.
There is no official way to do this — the Rules of Handicapping only ever run score → differential → index, never backwards. So we derive it by rearranging the Score Differential formula rather than reaching for a folk multiplier:
Score Differential = (113 ÷ Slope) × (score − Course Rating) index ≈ (113 ÷ Slope) × (average − Course Rating) − 3 assuming a standard course (Slope 113, Course Rating 71.5) this collapses to: index ≈ average − 74.5
That last subtraction is the part most rules of thumb miss. A Handicap Index is the mean of your best 8 of the last 20 differentials — it describes your good days, not your typical ones. The USGA puts the gap at 2–5 strokes, saying a player only plays to their handicap about a fifth of the time; we take the middle of that band.
So a 72 average returns roughly −2.5, not scratch. That isn't a bug: someone whose mean is 72 is playing better than scratch across their best eight rounds.
It remains an estimate built on an assumed course. If you know your real index, type it instead and the whole map sharpens.
The course corpus mixes regulation layouts with 9-hole, executive and par-3 tracks, and their rating rows aren't interchangeable. A par-27 pitch-and-putt carrying a slope of 72 would come out “severe” for most mid-handicappers if you fed it through the formula unchecked.
So a tee only earns a verdict when it holds together as a regulation round:
slope between 55 and 155 (the USGA's own range) course rating and slope both present par 62 or higher (excludes executive & par-3) |rating − par| 8 or less (catches swapped or mismatched rows)
Anything that fails is shown as unrated, with the reason in words, and the rest of the course page carries on as normal. A missing verdict is a fact about the data. A wrong verdict is a lie, and it's the kind you'd only discover on the 14th tee.
